Random Monday #4: Best Halloween Episode EVER

my so called life halloween-747069

1. TV shows love holidays and they make great great episodes about them. I love all of the FRIENDS thanksgiving episodes, they are my favorites ever, but My So-Called Life’s Halloween episode is the best out there. Sure, the Pretty Little Liars have Halloween episodes and they are great, but no TV series compares with the quintessential show for teenagers. My So-Called Life is a piece of art, the writing is especially great and the best episode is, of course, the Halloween episode (actually, it’s really hard to pick one).

The costumes were out of this world or anything, but can we talk about Angela’s costume? The cat eye glasses and the lime button up sweater. Oh, dear… it almost made me want to change my Halloween costume.

2. I have not finished Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan). The anime.

3. Homestuck is on a huge pause again and the next update is going to be the final update. I kinda like that.

4. Did you know there’s a thing called bubble tea? Where can I get one? How do I make it at home? I so want to try it!!

Yes, this Random Monday was more of a “let’s talk about how great MSCL is and then add three short other things”, but that show is really great, ok? Did you watch it already? What are you waiting for?

The Geeky List: Vampires, Sherlock and Titans

This is my third Geeky List and this one also has a TV show. As you can probably tell I watch way too much TV – not including the anime in this category. But I am totally sure that it’s not my fault, I am not the one who produces such awesome and entertaining TV series so don’t blame me for watching them!! Mmm… yeah, let’s start:

  • The Little Vampire book series by Angela Sommer-Bodenburg with illustrations by Amelie Glienke. I love children books and I also love monsters and scary creatures, now combine those too add some really nice illustration and you have the secret of happiness – not joking! I won’t go into details with this series because I already did here and here, but I have to tell that if I ever have kids we’ll have lots of fun reading about the adventures of Rudiger – the little vampire – and Anton, his human friend.
  • In my last Geeky List post I mentioned that the next one – this one – will have lots of Sherlock, and it’s true in a way, but more Sherlock to come in the next ones!

I finished the BBC Sherlock a long time ago but I am still obsessed with it and I can’t stop reblogging anything related with it on tumblr. I also re-watch some episodes from time to time and I make everyone who isn’t watching it watch it because that’s how obsessed I am and the show is just too great to ignore it. It’s a modern take on Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories and it’s just amazing! There’s also another Sherlock show called Elementary and I will start that one soon because the friend who got me to watch Sherlock recommended it to me. I feel so lucky for having friends that only give good recommendations.
  • Now I know I talk about anime&manga in my Otaku Sunday series, but Shingeki no Kyojin (in English: Attack on Titan) has taken over my life!! After every new episode from the anime I was left with more questions than answers (kinda like Pretty Little Liars does) so why not read the manga and see if any of my theories is any good? Now I have even more questions and while some of my theories turned out to be quite good now I have even more theories and I need to know more but you have to wait like a week for the anime and I am not sure how much for the next chapter in the manga!! It’s crazy, I tell you.

I guess this is all for today, it’s quite a short and not detailed list but I have to go Indian food and I don’t want to be late. See you next time! I also leave you with this awesome song about geeky girls (and not only)!

SFC #1: Detectives, Parties, Boyfriends and Camp

SFC stands for “Some-kind-of-Film-Club” and I first introduced it months ago but now it’s the first time I actually make a proper blog post with, you know, films! The way I pick the films is simple and it goes just like a wedding: something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue.

Something Old: Sherlock Jr., 1924, Buster Keaton, starring Buster Keaton, Kathryn McGuire, Joe Keaton

I am a big Buster Keaton fan and I think a Keaton film is the perfect choice for my first film club blog post. Sherlock Jr. is probably on the top of my list. It’s more of a short film since it only has like 40 minutes or so, but it’s a great silent comedy film and one of the funniest. Keaton plays a cinema projectionist who is in love with a girl but he is not the only one. Both of them are penniless and while Keaton manages to find money to buy her a box of chocolate, his rival steals in order to do the same but somehow the blame falls on poor Keaton. And that’s when the detective comes in play… more or less. It’s an adorable and hilarious film and if you are new to silent films this is a great one to start with.

Something New: The Great Gatsby, 2013, Baz Luhrmann, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan

Since I have to enjoy this film club by myself (if you didn’t know already I used to have a film club with other people and we met and discuss the films and it was tons of fun, but unfortunately it couldn’t last) I think it’s a good idea to pick the new films from the current year – if I don’t have a film from ’90 to 2012 that I really really want to share with you. This film was like fireworks! It got a lot of critique because of that and because of not capturing the true nature of the book, but since I didn’t do my homework and didn’t read the book I can’t complain about it. I think the director did a great job throwing majestic visual parties and also playing with dramatic elements from time to time. I had moments when I was bored but I knew already that a film about a guy obsessed with a girl won’t keep my eyes on the screen all time.

I still have the novel on my to-read list since everyone keeps talking about how the film was able to expose the plot, but not the essence of the book. But I have a lot of things about the film that I loved (plot not being one of them). I liked the modern music, I loved the 1920’s atmosphere, the mysteries surrounding Gaysby – though I didn’t find Gatsby particularly interesting, Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan and Daisy – even if we have a lot of reasons to hate her, she was very human and that’s something I admire, Leonardo DiCaprio’s acting and the yellow car. But there was lacking… lacking in chemistry more exactly, lacking in keeping me entertained. I also couldn’t connect with Spider-Man… I mean Tobey Maguire and his character Nick Carraway and if you ask me he was the character that was supposed to be closest to us, the viewers, yet something was missing, or more exactly something was there, a wall between us and him. Even so, I do recommend the film for the grandeur of the visual, the crazy parties, the peculiar but great combination between the modern music and the old atmosphere (and awesome dancing moves!)

Something Borrowed: Fish Tank, 2009, Andrea Arnold, starring Katie Jarvis, Michael Fassbender

For my foreign film I had to pick Fish Tank, a British movie who scored the Cannes Jury Prize. I watched it on a night in one of my train rides and it made me feel many different emotions. I always find it hard to write the plot without spoiling anything. Fish Tank is a drama film about Mia, a reckless teenager from a lower-class family, who often fights with her mother and sister and who is attracted to her mom’s new boyfriend. This film feels so unprocessed and Mia’s character – in fact, all the characters – is so real and natural and I no longer felt I was watching a movie… Mia (played by Katie Jarvis) is a strong, complex character so different by the cliche teenager portrayed in so many other films. When I wasn’t busy controlling my emotions (because I was in a train) I spent my time wondering why Michael Fassbender’s face is so familiar to me. He played Connor, the boyfriend, in Fish Tank but he was also Edward Rochester in Jane Eyre (from 2011) and the guy with the wrong “three” in Inglourious Basterds. Anyway, Fish Tank is a strong, yet fragile film and needs to be watched now – not on a train ride, if possible. Oh, also, the images are so clean, almost minimalist really, but full with emotions. Great scenery.

Something Blue: The Parent Trap, 1998, Nancy Meyers, starring Lindsay Lohan, Dennis Quiad, Maggie Wheeler (not leading role, but I had to mention Janice from FRIENDS!)

For my random pick this SFC the winner is: The Parent Trap… for various reasons like camps are awesome or Janice or I like funny films with twins (well, this one doesn’t have real twin like the Olsen movies I also adore, but whatever) and did I mention camps? I know that not many people are keen on Lindsay Lohan but I rarely care what an actress is doing in her personal life, I find her funny in movies (Mean Girls is another one of my favorites). In The Parent Trap two twin sisters meet for the first time and they change lives in order to meet the other parent. But things get serious when the father brings home a future mom. Now the twins must attack or they will never ever get back together! It’s a fun movie, guys, maybe a little bit too long and a bit too silly but every time I re-watch it I do it mostly for the camp part.

So this is it, the first SFC blog post with four very distinct films. Hope you like it!

Best Thing in the World: The Tudors

The Tudors is a TV show with four season about the Tudor dynasty… well, it only focuses on Henry VIII’s reign – mainly because there wasn’t much sex and marriage in Mary’s time on the throne.

First and the most obvious thing about the show… it’s not historically accurate nor does it say it is, but I had to say it to make sure people who watch it and are interested in England’s history find other sources to satisfy their curiosity and not this show. It starts a lot of sub stories and then abandons then like nothing ever happened. Also… some characters seem to vanish without any explanation. Also, Henry VIII from this show is a lot more handsome that the real one and this one doesn’t get fat in time. But still, the show is pretty OK. I mean, they got the six wives right!

It focuses a lot on Henry’s marriages and on sex (because fan service, fan service… how else would it run for four seasons?), but it still leaves time and space for political intrigues and all that awesome Jazz. The other awesome part about the show is the cast: all handsome and good actors and actresses. And the costumes are divine! And my favourite part about the show: most characters get really awesome speeches and monologues just before their head is getting ready to say “bye-bye” to the body!

You should watch it! If not for all the things I said then because Margaery Tyrell (Natalie Dormer on her true name) plays Anne Boleyn!

The Geeky List: Pokemon, writing and GOT

I am finally writing this!! Ever since I introduced the Geeky List I was eager to write an actual Geeky List post. I had some things on the list a few weeks ago, but then they changed and then I tried to have a themed Geeky List and that didn’t work either so now I am just writing and sharing some awesome stuff!

  • First on the list is this awesome application (or website, whatever) called Pokemon Fusion! And it is exactly what you think it is! You can have a Chanchu or a Dewpix, a Jigglyfing, a Jigglypix, a Weepinchu or a Weepintales! And that is awesome!catsdgfd
  • July is almost here (well, not really, still exams period) and that means that Camp NaNoWriMo July is almost here! NaNoWriMo is the National Novel Writing Month and that takes place in November. But because the thing is really cool for people who enjoy writing (but don’t really feel like publishing or anything – like me) and are huge procrastinators and a month of writing is not enough so there are also Camps, and this are a little bit more relaxed that the NaNo during November because you set your own goal count and you have a cabin and you meet new people. And this brings us to the other point of why is NaNoWriMo so cool! Not just because you have to write a novel in 30/31 days but you write it along with other people and you get on forums or cabins and talk about your struggling with the novel, your writer’s block and even random things that have nothing to do with writing! I still don’t know what to write in July, if to start something new or write the second part of my June fan-fic called The Black Secret. But there’s still time.
  • And my last thing on the list: Game of Thrones, the TV show, especially after the episode from last week. It was hard to find a picture that isn’t a massive spoiler but it kinda talks about what happened in the episode, but I did it with the help of tumblr:
If you aren’t watching this show or reading the books… then why are you still here? Go, read those damn huge books or at least watch that damn awesome TV show because it’s worth it! If you want to read the book I recommend doing it in English (I tried in Romanian and failed, now I am reading them on my PC, in English but I plan to buy them soon!!!). Now I am pretty sure I will repeat things on my Geeky List so GOT is here because of the last episode called The Rains of Castamere and it features this amazing song that talks about The Lannisters and I am simply in love with the song! Now it’s going to be hard to talk about the event called The Red Wedding without you, know, spoilers, but I will try. George R.R. Martin said that this was the hardest chapter to write and I can totally see why. Also, a lot of GOT fans were really sad (some of them quite upset in an absurd way) because of it, including me, but if you think a little bit about what Martin does it shouldn’t be such a big surprise, right? As for those who were upset, deal with it! Plus, this is one of the reasons why A Song of Ice and Fire series and Game of Thrones are so f**king awesome! Still sad about the episode? Click here!

So this is my list, the things I love or I am obsessed with. At first I wanted to include five things on each list but until I had five I was already over the first two so I decided to just write the list when I have three or more things to write about. Hope you like it! Go play with Pokemon Fusion, get ready for Camp NaNoWriMo the July edition and read or watch Game of Thrones!

Last Week in Photos #7: Still Winter

lovely tea | a view of the sky | Castle and Plant
buds | wrestling | learning Hiragana
me in red | sketches for the comics | weekend food with friends

Remember how last time Winter was coming back? Well… after some days of really really hot weather, Winter decided to stay and it snowed again. But the ugly part was the wind and the cold and… the fact that it all happened during the weekend!!

Last week  I discovered an awesome tea sent by a pen-pal. It was delicious! I started watching Wrestling again (and it’s addicting, again) and I am just in time for Wrestlemania! YES!

I re-organized the closets and I discovered an old favourite of mine: my super warm red sweater. Didn’t dare to put in the box with the other Winter clothes because I didn’t have the chance to wear it this Winter and since we had some cold weather I enjoyed it!!

I started learning Japanese again and this time I focus on writing too and right now I try to learn Hiragana while not falling behind with the drawings for school (for the comics class we have to draw some psychological test and we aren’t supposed to know the signification of the elements, but I already know the test…).

We spent the weekend with friends and cooked some delicious stuff and we played Silent Hill games and watched a Korean horror movie. I know there is no cat in the photo-set so here’s some Mogu for you:

Tag: Pretty Little Liars

Today I watched the finale from Pretty Little Liar. At first I wanted to do one of my Best Thing in the World post, but I was an youtube and stumbled upon a Pretty Little Liars tag and I just wanted to do it too! Spoiler Alert!!

1. Who is your favorite character?

In the beginning I liked Aria because she seemed so artsy but she became really annoying so I started to like Spencer because she’s the brain, you know, and she has funny faces. But today I realized I prefer Hanna. She says the funniest things!!

2. Who do you think is behind the “A-Team”?

Behind the A-Team is the girl in the red coat! Ha ha! I think we already know that Alison is the Big A, right?

3. Who do you ship?

I am not one who ships when watching shows. I rarely do (though I recently discovered that I ship Caroline and Klaus from Vampire Diaries). But if I really have to pick… mno, I can’t pick because Ezra and Aria are annoying, Hanna and Caleb are ok but I am not interested and I am not one of Spoby’s fans (Spencer+Toby). Let’s say I ship Ashley (Hanna’s mom) with that priest.

4. Most memorable cheesy/stupid moment?

Oh, the show has so many cheesy and/or stupid moments that I don’t know what to pick. Almost every thing the Liars do is STUPID! I sometimes wonder if they think at all – at least they did in the finale (isn’t it a little bit too late? Like you know your every move is watched by “A” and you only think about this in the season 3 finale???).

5. Who is your favorite villain?

Oh, I love Mona. She plays the crazy bitch so well that’s a great pleasure to watch.

6. Which girl do you think has been hurt the most by A?

Well… probably Spencer. Or Mona, ha ha! But yeah, Spencer had it pretty hard. Though in real life it would probably be Aria, I mean her family was destroyed because of A but this doesn’t help the ratings, right? Spoby drama does!!

7. Which girl’s style do you like the most? Which girl do you relate to the most?

I used to like the casual Emily and I love Spencer’s style because I like the classy preppy things. Relate in the sense of style? Probably none because I can’t say I have a characteristic style, but I prefer the casual-formal things.

8. Why do the girls keep seeing Allison? Do you think there is something more behind it?

*cough* Season 3 finale *cough*. Oh, well, I wasn’t sure those “dreams” were ever dreams or hallucinations mainly because of Aria’s doll.

9. Who is your crush on the show?

Wren! Oh, well, I guess the British accent never fails, right?

10. Who is your least favorite character? (4 girls and overall)

From the Liars… to be honest I don’t really fancy Aria – no reason. And overall I kinda hate Toby – just because. Well, I think I hate him because of the viewers. The story would be so much cooler if he was really bad but a good story is no good for ratings, Spoby is!

11. What was the biggest shocking moment for you?

I don’t remember right now. Probably the Jenna-Shana (her name is Shana, right?) thing. They met before Shana was even introduced and I just didn’t see that one.

12. Do you think Tobey is really dead?

We already know this answer…

13. What would you do if A was after you?

Well… if I was Emily MY FUCKING DAD IS SOMETHING IN THE ARMY! But me… I don’t think I’m rich enough to have no other worries than A.

This is it! I had fun and I had fun watching the show (now I have to wait until the next season… ugh). It’s like a guilty pleasure because sometimes is a teeny soap opera and sometimes a really nice mystery thriller show. And I love that every finale is after a Hitchcock film.
